What causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath/stench is not just a condition but can also be a symptom of severe dental concern. For this very reason, bad breath calls for an immediate dental consultation. After a complete study of the condition of the teeth and gums, proper treatment or medication is suggested by the dentist.

In the majority of cases, bad breath could be an outcome of an improper dental care routine. American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day and flossing every day. This helps in keeping not just bad breath but also cavity and gum infections at bay.

Here are a few causes of Bad Breath.

Causes of Bad Breath:

1.Inadequate Oral Hygiene: Oral care is extremely important for not just the teeth and gums but also for the overall well-being of the individual. Brushing twice a day, flossing every day, drinking enough water, eating right, brushing with the right technique, etc are essential aspects of oral care to keep in mind. Preemptive care is necessary, especially for dental health.

2.Dry Mouth: Saliva secretion is an important biological activity that ensures a healthy and hydrated mouth. This prevents bacteria from damaging the gums and the teeth. This condition of dry mouth is called xerostomia and it needs immediate attention as it may lead to other problems if left untreated.

3.A possible gum infection: The plaque that gets built up on the gum line damages the gums and causes infection. Bad breath is one of the early symptoms of gum infection. Though it could also be due to improper oral care, persistent bad breath even after adequate care can be due to gum infection. In severe cases dentists suggest surgery but if it is left untreated it can lead to bone loss and tooth loss as well.

4.Medication: Some medications can also cause bad breath even after they break down inside the body.

Treatment for Bad Breath

1.Mouthwash: This is the simplest treatment that can be suggested by a dentist to prevent bad breath. This helps to deep clean the mouth and remove all the bacteria that are responsible for oral odor. Mouthwash is prescribed for bad breath that is caused due to improper oral care. Using mouthwash multiple times a day ensures fresh breath and good gum and teeth health.

2.Treatment for Dental concerns: Since bad breath can be a symptom of serious dental concern, a treatment for the disease needs to give. Consulting a periodontist after a consultation with a general dentist should be the first step to treating bad breath.

Apart from these treatments, bad breath can be prevented by having good oral care habits and food habits. Junk and sugary foods need to be avoided. Garlic and onion are considered the main reasons for bad breath and they do not go even after brushing. Regular brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash if required can be some of the first few steps to prevent bad breath.

Bad breath can be definitely treated by following the mentioned procedures. But if it has anything to do with a serious dental concern it can be a lengthy process.
