Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing procedure, often referred to as a deep dental cleaning, is a more intensive procedure than a regular cleaning. It is a common non-surgical procedure. It involves removing plaque and tartar from deep beneath the gum line and smoothing the tooth roots.

Why is Scaling and Root Planing Necessary?

When plaque and tartar build up below the gum line, it can lead to gum disease. This condition can cause inflammation, bleeding gums, and even tooth loss. Scaling and root planing is essential to remove these harmful deposits and promote gum health.

How Does Scaling and Root Planing Work?

The deep cleaning procedure includes:

  1. Periodontal Scaling: Dental practitioners use specialized devices to remove tartar accumulation from above and below the gum line.
  1. Root Planing: This produces a smooth surface, making it more difficult for plaque and tartar to reconnect.

During a scaling and root planing procedure, your dentist or hygienist will administer local anesthesia to numb the area. They will then use special dental instruments to carefully remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line. The tooth roots will also be smoothed to discourage bacteria from adhering.

How Many Visits are Required?

Scaling and root planing is often performed in multiple visits to ensure thorough cleaning and to allow for healing between sessions.

While minimizing pain this allows:

  1. Adequate numbing: Numbing your entire mouth at once may make it difficult to chew, swallow, and speak.
  1. Thorough treatment: Multiple sessions allow enough time to address all aspects of gum disease.

It’s important to follow up with your periodontist a month after the procedure to assess the success of the treatment and address any remaining issues.

Conclusion

While scaling and root planing are necessary for treating gum disease, frequent dental examinations and basic oral hygiene are also required to maintain healthy gums and teeth. By removing harmful bacteria and promoting gum health, this procedure can help prevent tooth loss and maintain a beautiful smile.
